charitable and educational ministries in order to
enhance and support the growth of our church as we
work to achieve goals as an inclusive, caring
community of women.
THE

church regularly, are in good standing, and have

VOLUNTEER
SERVICE GUILD
The
Volunteer Service Guild came into being in 1957 during
the construction of the new Radcliffe Church. The
guild was organized to supplement the resources of the
church and to enhance its cultural life. The
first project undertaken by the Guild was furnishing
the church kitchen. This had been the dream of
the late Cecilia Mercer. This project was
successfully completed by the original twelve charter
members. Louise Bolar*, Mary Ellen Boazman*, Anne Cox,
Elsie Foster Evans*, India Harris, Verna Henderson,
Margaret Jacobs, Cecilia Mercer*, Montee Odom*, Gladys
Scott*, Myra Staley&, and Betty Williams*
*Deceased
Through
its yearly projects the Guild has carpeted the
sanctuary, equipped the chancel with a candelabra,
Bible podium and altar urns, paid for the repair of a
copying machine and helped to fund the payment
of one of the church’s mortgage
accounts. Most recently the Guild contributed to
the building fund, purchased items for the kitchen,
including installation fees, donated toys to the
Southwest Ecumenical Emergency Assistance Center (SWEEAC)
and financed the launching of the first THESPIAN
MINISTRY designed especially for children and youth.
Planned
projects to enhance the cultural life of Radcliffe
include the Hymn Fest, Hobby Teas, Presentation of
local and nationally known artists and high school and
college choral groups, exhibition of Black Inventors,
Black Heritage Dinner, 2001 Program. “Celebrating
the Journey, - An Imaginary Trip Across The Bridge of
Faith”.
From
its inception, the Guild has strongly encouraged all
of its members to be in good standing in the church;
to be every mindful that the Guild is an entity in the
life of the church, not to compete or replace but to
work cooperatively within the framework of the total
church program.
Through
the years the Guild has lost and gained members,
initiated and discontinued programs.. However
the Hymn Fest has lasted through the forty-four years
of the Guild’s existence. We are committed to
supplementing the resources, enhancing the cultural
life and supporting the ongoing programs of the
church.
